Learn to Sail (ages 6 -12)

Our Optimist program introduces young sailors to the fundamentals of sailing aboard the Sail Qube — a stable, kid-friendly version of the world’s most popular youth sailboat.

Beginner sailors will learn how to steer, tack, gybe, sail on all points of sail, and safely right their boat after a capsize. Every participant must complete a swim and capsize test on the first day of the season.

As sailors gain confidence and control, they may advance to the intermediate level, where they’ll focus on:

  • Essential knots and proper rigging for varying conditions

  • Boat handling and maneuvering

  • Right-of-way rules and situational awareness

  • Building independence and sailing fluency

Next step: Intermediate sailors may be invited to join our Green Fleet racing team.

CGSC Racing Teams

GREEN FLEET:
The Green Fleet Optimist sailor has already learned how to sail yet wants to take the next step into developing his or her passion for sailing. In Green Fleet, sailors learn the fundamentals of racing: advanced boat handling, tactics and strategy, basic wind awareness, and the function/process of a regatta. Our Green Fleet Optimist program is a great way for a young sailor to foster self-discipline, confidence, camaraderie, and respect for the sport. These sailors are introduced to competitive sailing and gain the core skills necessary to eventually move up to our Red, White, and Blue fleet racing team.

Sailors will be divided into different training groups based on skill level and regatta experience, but will often be training together.

SCHEDULE & COST:

Wednesdays, 4pm – 6pm | Saturdays & Sundays, 9am – 4pm
Member: $1,635 | Non Member: $1,735 per season

RWB CHAMPIONSHIP FLEET:
The Optimist Red, White, and Blue championship fleet is the highest level of racing an optimist sailor can participate in. Our sailors advance from Green Fleet into Red, White, and Blue once they demonstrate a working knowledge of the racing rules and tactics, and exhibit a maturity level appropriate to the level of competition. These sailors are dedicated and motivated to continue perfecting their sailing skills, and thus are required to purchase their own boat and gear in competitive condition.

We divide the training groups into development and advanced teams, where coaches make the selection based on, but not limited to, equipment, regatta experience, attendance, and behavior.

SCHEDULE & COST:

Wednesdays, 4pm – 6:pm | Saturdays & Sundays, 9am-5pm
Member: $1,890 | Non Member: $2090 per season

ILCA RACING TEAM
This program is only for advanced ILCA sailors with racing experience who are under 19 years of age. This program constitutes an elite racing program with aim of attending ILCA sanctioned regattas in order to qualify for ICLA Continental and World Championships.

Sailors must provide a racing resume and be approved by the Head Coach, or have graduated from the Laser Development Team.

SCHEDULE & COST:

Fridays 4pm -6pm | Saturdays and Sundays 9am – 4pm
Member: $1,780 | Non Member: $1,1980 per season

CLUB 420 RACING TEAM
This is our competitive option for double-handed sailors.  The 420 racing team will travel to local and regional Club 420 class regattas with the goal of developing a serious contender for North American championship. As part of their continued development, instruction will focus on trapeze, spinnaker sailing and overall boat handling, team communication, as well more advanced racing strategy and tactics theory. Sailors must be 13 years of age and weigh 110 pounds to participate and complete in the class. Boats will be provided for the sailors.

SCEHDULE & COST:

Saturdays and Sundays, 9am – 4pm
Members: $1,550 | Non Members: $1,650 per season

WINDSURFING

BEGINNER & INTERMEDIATE WINDSURFING

A new offering at CGSC, our windsurfing program provides the perfect option for those sailors who seek a faster and exciting pace on the water. Our child friendly and light weight equipment allows kids as young as 6 to discover the fun and adventure of windsurfing. Beginners learn the basic positions on the board, how to use each hand to control and power the sail, and learn how to tack and gybe. By incorporating fun drills on the water, students develop critical balancing skills on the boards.

Once students are proficient at these basic skills, sailors move up to the intermediate level where they learn how body and sail position, along with weight distribution facilitates their ability to better control direction and gain speed. The goal of the intermediate program is to get windsurfers to plane on their boards, prepare them for foiling, and introduce them to windsurf racing.

Windsurfers who enjoy competing will have the opportunity to participate in local regattas throughout the academic year. The ultimate goal of the windsurfing program is to develop a high-performance foiling team that can compete at various regional and national regattas.

SCHEDULE & COST:

Beginners:
Wednesdays, 4pm –  6pm | Sundays, 9am – Noon

Intermediate | Beginner Foilers:
Thursdays, 4pm – 6pm | Sundays, 1pm to 5pm

Cost: Member: $1,000 | Non Member: $1100 per season
