Learn to Sail

BEGINNER & INTERMEDIATE OPTIMIST SAILING (Ages 6 - 12):

Novice sailors are introduced to the world of sailing aboard a roto-molded, self-bailing, opti trainer called the Sail Qube. Our Learn to Sail program teaches young skippers how to leave and return to the dock, basic sailing maneuvers, how to sail on all points of sail, and how to right a boat from a capsize. Every sailor, regardless of experience, will have to pass a swim and capsize test on the first day of the season.
Once sailors gain proficiency in the basics, they will be invited to join the intermediate group, which focuses on a more advanced curriculum appropriate to age and skill level. Areas of focus include teaching basic knots, proper rigging given wind conditions, improving basic boat maneuvers and handling skills, right of way concepts, and more.

/SCHEDULE & COST:
Saturdays OR Sundays, 11am-4pm
Member: $900 | Non Member: $1,000 per season

After School:

OPTIMIST FLEETS

Optimist Green Fleet: Boat: Optimist

The Green Fleet Optimist sailor has already learned how to sail yet wants to take the next step into developing his or her passion for sailing. In Green Fleet, sailors learn the fundamentals of racing: advanced boat handling, tactics and strategy, basic wind awareness, and the function/process of a regatta. Our Green Fleet Optimist program is a great way for a young sailor to foster self-discipline, confidence, camaraderie, and respect for the sport. These sailors are introduced to competitive sailing and gain the core skills necessary to eventually move up to our Red, White, and Blue fleet racing team.

Schedule: Wednesdays, 4-6pm

Saturdays, 9am-3pm & Sundays, 9am-3pm

Member: $1335.00 | Non Member: $1445.00

Optimist Championship RWB Fleet: Boat: Optimist

The Optimist Red, White, and Blue championship fleet is the highest level of racing an optimist sailor can participate in. Our sailors advance from Green Fleet into Red, White, and Blue once they demonstrate a working knowledge of the racing rules and tactics, and exhibit a maturity level appropriate to the level of competition. These sailors are dedicated and motivated to continue perfecting their sailing skills, and thus are required to purchase their own boat and gear.

Schedule: Wednesdays, 4-6pm

Saturdays, 10am-5pm & Sundays, 10am-5pm

Member: $1375.00 | Non Member: $1475.00

ILCA FLEETS

ILCA DEVELOPMENT TEAM

The ILCA is the Men’s and Women’s Olympic single-handed class of small dinghy racing. A smaller rig than the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7, the ILCA 4 is the youth version of the ILCA Dinghy class and serves as a great introduction to the boat. The ILCA is a very physically demanding boat and as such requires a minimum weight of 110 pounds to handle the forces of the sail. Sailors in the ILCA program are required to own their own boat after three seasons of sailing at Coconut Grove Sailing Club.

The ILCA 6 is the next step up from the ILCA 4 with a 30% increase in sail area. The ILCA 6 is officially considered for World Sailing (the world governing body for the sport of sailing) ranking and can compete in officially sanctioned events. Sailors in the ILCA program are required to own their own boat after three seasons of sailing at Coconut Grove Sailing Club. A minimum weight of 130 pounds is required.

We divide the training/coaching groups into a Development Team and Advanced Team, coaches will make selection based on but not limited to, equipment, regatta experience, attendance, and behavior.

Member: $1,335.00 | Non Member: $1,445.00
